Travel is one of the best ways to relax, explore new places and step outside your normal routine. But between restaurant meals, cocktails, airport snacks, long flights and fewer workouts, it’s easy to come home from vacation feeling like your clothes fit a little differently.
The good news? You don’t have to choose between enjoying your vacation and maintaining your fitness.
The goal isn’t to come home lighter than when you left. The goal is to enjoy your trip while maintaining healthy habits and avoiding the all-or-nothing mentality.
According to the CDC, maintaining a healthy weight involves a combination of nutritious eating and regular physical activity—and even short periods of movement during travel count.
Here are some of my favorite ways to stay active and avoid unnecessary weight gain while traveling.
1. Make Walking Part of Your Vacation
This is probably the easiest travel fitness strategy.
Instead of taking a taxi everywhere, walk whenever it’s practical and safe.
Explore a new city on foot, walk to dinner, take the stairs at your hotel or go for a morning walk before everyone else wakes up.
You don’t need to spend an hour in a hotel gym when you might already be walking thousands of steps while sightseeing.

2. Don’t Turn Vacation Into a Food Free-for-All
One of the biggest mistakes people make is thinking:
“I’m on vacation, so it doesn’t matter what I eat.”
Of course you should enjoy local foods! But enjoying yourself doesn’t mean you need to eat every meal until you’re stuffed.
Try this simple strategy:
Eat normally when you’re hungry and stop when you’re satisfied.
Prioritize protein, vegetables, fruit and other nutrient-dense foods when they’re available. Then enjoy the foods that make your destination special.
The CDC notes that healthy eating doesn’t require eliminating entire food groups; variety and balance matter.
3. Start Your Day With Protein
A protein-rich breakfast can make it easier to manage hunger later in the day.
Consider options like:
- Eggs
- Greek yogurt
- Cottage cheese
- Fruit
- Oatmeal with nuts
- A protein smoothie
If your hotel offers a breakfast buffet, you don’t have to sample everything simply because it’s there!
4. Don’t Forget Your Water
Travel can make it surprisingly easy to drink less water than normal.
Bring a reusable water bottle and make hydration part of your routine.
And remember that sometimes what feels like hunger is actually thirst.
The CDC specifically recommends carrying water while traveling and choosing water or lower-calorie beverages instead of sugary drinks.
5. Be Smart About Alcohol
If you enjoy an occasional cocktail or glass of wine on vacation, that’s perfectly fine.
The key is being aware of how often you’re drinking and what you’re drinking alongside it.
Try alternating alcoholic drinks with water or sparkling water. You can still enjoy the local wine, cocktail or beer without making every meal a drinking occasion.
6. You Don’t Need a Full Gym Workout
Your workout doesn’t have to look exactly like it does at home.
Try a 15–20 minute hotel-room workout consisting of:
- Squats
- Lunges
- Push-ups
- Glute bridges
- Planks
- Step-ups
- Bodyweight rows if equipment is available
Even a short workout can help you maintain your routine and remind you that fitness doesn’t have to stop just because you’re traveling.

Fitness influencer Kayla Itsines has long emphasized workouts that can be done virtually anywhere, using bodyweight, free weights or machines. She’s also talked about staying active while traveling, including walking after a flight.

7. Pack Your Own Travel Snacks
Airport and road-trip food can make healthy eating much harder.
Instead of waiting until you’re starving, pack a few convenient options:
- Nuts
- Protein bars
- Fruit
- Jerky
- Whole-grain crackers
- Greek yogurt when refrigeration is available
The CDC also recommends bringing healthy snacks such as fruit, vegetables and unsalted nuts when traveling.

8. Enjoy the Food You REALLY Want
Here’s an important one: don’t waste your vacation calories on food you don’t even care about.
If you’re visiting Italy and there’s an amazing pizza you’ve been looking forward to, enjoy the pizza!
If you’re in France, enjoy the pastry.
If you’re in Budapest, try the local cuisine.
The trick is to enjoy special foods intentionally, rather than mindlessly eating whatever happens to be available.
9. Get Enough Sleep
Late nights, early flights and changing time zones can disrupt your sleep schedule.
Try to prioritize sleep whenever possible.
Lack of sleep can make it harder to manage hunger, energy and exercise motivation, so getting enough rest is another part of maintaining your healthy routine.
10. Don’t Stress About the Scale
This might be the most important tip of all.
Don’t weigh yourself every morning on vacation.
Travel can temporarily change your weight because of differences in sodium intake, carbohydrates, hydration, digestion and your normal activity level.
A little fluctuation doesn’t automatically mean you’ve gained body fat.
Instead of obsessing over the number on the scale, focus on your habits:
Move your body. Eat well most of the time. Stay hydrated. Get some sleep. Enjoy yourself.
Then get back to your normal routine when you get home.
The Bottom Line
A vacation shouldn’t feel like a fitness punishment.
You don’t need to spend your trip counting every calorie or spending hours in a hotel gym. Small choices add up.
Walk a little more. Drink more water. Eat protein and vegetables. Enjoy the foods you really want. Get in a quick workout when you can.
And most importantly, enjoy your vacation!
The goal isn’t perfection. It’s learning how to maintain healthy habits even when life doesn’t look exactly like your normal routine.
